Workshop Schedule

The Writing Center is pleased to offer workshops on a variety of topics to help students to improve their writing, study, and life skills.  Workshops are FREE to SBVC students!


Note on Enrollment in LST-606

Students who use any of the Writing Center's services may be automatically enrolled in the LST-606 noncredit course. Students will not be charged for the course, nor will it affect their GPA. It is used to document usage of services to help with apportionment funding for tutoring/learning services. For more information, click here.


Requirements and Policies for Workshops
  • Only SBVC students with an active student ID number may participate in any workshop offered by the Writing Center.
  • Anyone acting inappropriately or showing inappropriate content during workshop sessions may lose tutoring/workshop privileges and disciplinary action may be sought.
  • Anyone exhibiting rude or offensive behavior and/or language during workshop sessions may lose tutoring/workshop privileges and disciplinary action may be sought.

Workshop Tips and Reminders
  • For workshops provided ONLINE, no registration is required.
  • For workshops provided IN PERSON, no registration is required.
  • Participants need to be on time for workshops.  Participants who are late to a workshop may not be permitted entry into the workshop since it will interrupt the session.
  • Recordings and PowerPoint presentations for workshops are not available for distribution.  However, students may take notes and ask the presenter questions during the workshop presentations.

Instructions
  1. To attend a workshop, first look through the topics and workshop schedule listed below.

  2. When you have selected the workshop(s) that you wish to attend, you may do one of the following options:
    • For IN PERSON workshops, no registration is required.  Simply go to the location indicated on the day and time of the workshop.
    • For ONLINE workshops, click on the link under the workshop topic to access the Workshop Links webpage that provides the Zoom links for the workshops.  For more information, follow the instructions in the blue box below. 
    • Reminder:  You must be a currently enrolled student in order to register for any of the Writing Center workshops.            

 

When you click on a link for an online workshop that you would like to attend, you will be taken to the SBCCD Portal.  Enter your User Name and Password as follows:

Username Format:

1.  Student Username must be:  <username>@student.sbccd.edu

     (Example: j.doe1234@student.sbccd.edu)

2.  The password is the same one that you use for SelfService.


HELPFUL TIPS:  If you are experiencing difficulty with accessing the SBCCD portal, try the following troubleshooting methods below.


TROUBLESHOOTING METHOD 1:

  1. Clear the history in your web browser and try accessing the SBCCD portal again by CLICKING HERE.
  2. If this doesn't work, copy and paste the following link into a different web browser and click Enter

For instance, if you are currently using Google Chrome, you might try accessing your Zoom link in Firefox or Microsoft Edge.

TROUBLESHOOTING METHOD 2:

  1. Use Google Chrome and enter incognito mode by pressing CTRL + SHIFT + N on your keyboard.  Note:  Your screen will have a black background.
  2. Copy and paste the following link into your browser while in incognito mode:  https://www.valleycollege.edu/student-services/tutoring-academic-support/writing-center/workshop-links.php     
  3. Click Enter.
  4. Click on the registration link for the workshop that you wish to attend.

TROUBLESHOOTING METHOD 3:

If you are not able to register for a workshop and need assistance, email the lead instructor, Dr. Lee, at dlee@valleycollege.edu .

 
For ONLINE workshops:
  1. When you have accessed the Workshop Links webpage, you will be provided with list of all the Zoom links for the workshops that the Writing Center offers.  

  2. To enter an online workshop, simply click on the link to the right of the workshop topic that you wish to attend on the day and time of the workshop.  The link will be labeled as CLICK HERE TO ENTER WORKSHOP.  You will need to access the link a few minutes before the scheduled time of your workshop to be admitted into the workshop.

Verification of Workshop Attendance
  • To receive a verification email indicating workshop attendance, participants must attend and participate in the workshop.
Instructions to Receive a Verification Email for Workshop Attendance
  1. At the beginning of a workshop, the presenter will provide a link in the Chat box in Zoom for you to click on to access the online attendance form.  Please follow the presenter's instructions carefully.
  2. To sign-in to the workshop, be sure to enter all of the required information into the online attendance form.
  3. At the end of the workshop, you will be asked to access the online attendance form one more time to sign-out of the workshop.  Be sure to enter all of the required information into the online attendance form to receive a verificaiton email for workshop attendance.
  4. Note:  Verificaiton emails take about 24 to 48 hours to receive.
