Advanced Placement LVN to RN Program

Advanced placement applicants must follow the same application process as the General ADN program. See Application Page for more information. Applicants for the LVN to RN program will compete with the Generic ADN applicants. LVN to RN students are typically admitted every semester, contingent upon applicant pool. LVN to RN students receive credit for Nursing Fundamentals course (NURS 150) and will be enrolled in the transitional Vocational to Professional Nurse course (NURS 140).

Advanced Placement students in NURS 140 will be given the opportunity to challenge the first and second semester nursing courses consisting of NURS 151, NURS 160, and NURS 161. A student's final placement into either first, second, or third semester of the nursing program will be dependent on passing the required challenge exams for first and second semester.

Requirements: 

 LVN-RN Bridge students will be required to apply on the same point system as the General ADN students. All prerequisites must be completed with grades posted at time of application. In addition to completing prerequisites and having an active license that is in good standing, LVNs need to meet and submit the following: 

  • LVNs MUST have one (1) year minimum (2,080 hours) of direct patient care experience within the previous five (5) years and validated clinical competence. Clinical competence means that an LVN possesses and exercises the degree of learning, skill, care and experience ordinarily possessed and exercised by staff level LVN of the clinical unit.
  • A detailed resume and signed letter of verification from the employer with signature. Resume MUST include dates of employment for each employer and whether it was full-time (FT), part-time (PT) or per diem (PD).
  • An active LVN license (with no disciplinary actions), social security or tax ID number, are all required to apply.

Launch/PACS Apprenticeship

San Bernardino Valley College's (SBVC) Associate Degree Nursing Program, in partnership with PACS (Providence Administrative Consulting Services) and the LAUNCH Apprenticeship Network, offers qualified advanced placement applicants who are LVNs a pathway to attain their RN licensure.

LVNs must follow the same application process as all other applicants for the Nursing Program but are considered for admission from only LVN applicants. SBVC admits LVN to RN applicants every semester, and applicants may be from the LAUNCH Apprenticeship Network.

LVNs admitted into the program will be given the opportunity to challenge the first and second semester nursing courses. A student's final placement into either the first, second, or third semester of the Nursing Program will be dependent on passing the required challenge exams for the first and second semesters.

LVN to RN Eligibility Requirements

  • One (1) year of full-time or two (2) years of part-time employment (totaling 2,080 hours) as an LVN.
  • Detailed résumé documenting the past five (5) years of employment history, education, and any skills or certifications.
  • Employment verification letter on company letterhead with employer signature.
  • Active LVN license in good standing and a Social Security or Tax ID number.
  • LAUNCH/Providence Apprenticeship applicants will be evaluated using the multi-criteria point system.
  • Applicants must still complete all Nursing Program prerequisites and application requirements.

 

LVN 30 Unit Option

The LVN 30 Unit Option prepares students to take the NCLEX-RN examination, but does not award an Associate of Science (AS) degree. Individuals who become licensed as Registered Nurses using this option may not be eligible for licensure in states other than California. They may have difficulty applying to a college/university for an advanced degree. Licensed Vocational Nurses seeking the 30 Unit Option must make an appointment with Associate Dean of Health Science/Director of Nursing to discuss the courses and pathway required.

A background check and health requirement verification must be completed prior to enrollment in the program. Our Nursing program may deny applicants based on convictions. California may deny a Registered Nurse license to an applicant based on a conviction or legal action substantially related to the nursing practice.

Note: As of Spring 2022, the nursing program is requiring all entering students to be fully vaccinated against COVID 19
