Frequently Asked Questions

You can expand the sections below for answers to some of the most common questions we get asked. 

  • Science Prerequisite GPA

    • A minimum of a 2.8 is required.
    • 3 courses are considered in the calculation of your Science Prerequisite GPA:
      • Human Anatomy, Human Physiology, and Microbiology.

    General Education Prerequisite GPA

    • A minimum of a 3.0 is required.
    • 7 courses are considered in the calculation of your General Education Prerequisite GPA:
      • Freshman Composition, Statistics, Communication Studies, Introduction to Sociology or Cultural Anthropology, General Psychology, and 2 Humanities courses from 2 different disciplines.
      • Note: Starting Spring 2024 application, an ethnic studies course will also be considered in the calculation of your General Education Prerequisites GPA.

    Cumulative GPA Requirement

    • A minimum of a 2.75 Cumulative GPA is required for the Concurrent Enrollment Program (CEP) option.
    • There is no minimum Cumulative GPA requirement for the General Associate Degree in Nursing program or LVN-RN Bridge Program.

  • All of your prerequisite classes must be completed to be considered for our Nursing Programs. If they are still in progress, unfortunately your application will NOT be considered.

  • Fall 2023 Application Cycle for Spring 2024 Entry

    The following science prerequisite courses have a 5-year expiration for the SBVC Nursing Program:

    • BIOL 261 Human Physiology
    • BIOL 270 Microbiology
    • BIOL 250 Human Anatomy and Physiology I
    • BIOL 251 Human Anatomy and Physiology II
    • Note: BIOL 260 Human Anatomy does not expire

     

    Spring 2024 Application Cycle for Fall 2024 Entry and Beyond

    SBVC Nursing Programs will no longer have a recency requirement. Sciences will not expire.

  • Online science prerequisite classes (Anatomy, Physiology, and Microbiology) will be accepted only if:

    • The course was taken between Spring 2020 and Fall 2021 AND
    • The class was a previously accepted science course that was adapted to an online format due to the COVID-19 pandemic

    Hybrid courses taken after December 2021 will be accepted after December 2021 only if:

    • The lab portion of the course was taken in-person; the lecture portion can be online or in-person. AND
    • The science course was a previously accepted science course
  • Yes. SBVC Nursing only accepts 2 science repeats within Anatomy, Physiology, and Microbiology courses. Applicants with more than 2 science repeats will not be considered.

    The following are considered repeats:

    • W's
    • Re-taking passing sciences for a higher grade
    • Re-taking non-passing sciences

    The following are not considered repeats:

    • EW's
    • Expired sciences
  • Note: Students who have only taken courses at SBVC to fulfill the Nursing prerequisites, do NOT have to complete this. The Evaluation of Prior College Credits must be completed only by those who completed Nursing Prerequisite courses from a campus that is not San Bernardino Valley College.

    To complete an Evaluation of Prior Credit request, you will need to:

    1. Request that official transcripts from campuses outside of SBVC are sent to SBVC Admissions & Records: sbvcadmissions@valleycollege.edu
    2. Once official transcripts from campuses outside of SBVC have been received by Admissions & Records, complete an Evaluation of Prior Course Credits Earned. Be sure to check the box that says "for Nursing".
    3. Submit your completed Evaluation of Prior Course Credits Earned form to sbvcadmissions@valleycollege.edu between January 3rd – February 28th for students applying during Spring for Fall entry OR between July 1st – August 30th for students applying during Fall for Spring entry.

  • No. However, you will need a student ID number to apply for the program. Therefore, if you are not currently taking classes at SBVC, you will need to Apply to SBVC prior to applying to our program.
