About SAS

Under provisions of Section 504 and 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (as amended, ADAAA 2008) and Title V regulations, San Bernardino Valley College (SBVC) is required to provide accommodations for otherwise qualified students with disabilities that result in educational limitations. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) which guarantees high school students with disabilities access to free appropriate public education is not applicable in college. Student Accessibility Services (SAS) is the college’s office that serves in the capacity of providing academic accommodations to students with temporary or permanent disabilities.  Accommodations are designed to ensure student access to instructional programs and facilities at SBVC.  Accommodations are not designed to give students an advantage, but rather to provide equal opportunity in the classroom and in required student activities.   Accommodations are the means by which SBVC allows students to compensate for disability-related educational limitations.  Accommodations are determined on a case-by-case basis which involves a collaborative and deliberate dialogue (i.e., interactive process) between the student and an SAS counselor that takes into consideration the nature of the disability, the functional limitation(s) thereof, and the requirements of the course.  The mission of SAS is to ensure access to the college's curriculum, facilities, and programs, and to promote student success in realizing individual academic and career goals.
