Cal-GETC and Common Course Numbering: What You Need to Know
Big changes are coming to help SBVC students transfer more easily! Starting in fall 2025, two new initiatives- Cal-GETC (AB 928) and Common Course Numbering (AB 1111)- will simplify the transfer process and make it easier to plan your classes.
What is Cal-GETC?
Cal-GETC (California General Education Transfer Curriculum) will replace the current CSU GE and IGETC, as the new single general education pathway that fulfills the lower-division requirements for students transferring to CSU or UC. This means students won’t have to follow different sets of requirements depending on where you plan to transfer—just one streamlined general education pattern!
What’s Changing?
Here are some key differences from the CSU GE and IGETC patterns:
- Oral Communication (COMM C1000- Public Speaking) is now required for both CSU and UC
- Only two courses are allowed in the Arts and Humanities area.
- Lifelong Learning & Self-Development (CSU Area E) is not included but a course from this area can still count as an elective.
- Language Other Than English (LOTE) is removed from GE but still required for UC.
What is Common Course Numbering (CCN)?
CCN (Common Course Numbering), is designed to make transferring between colleges smoother and simpler. No more guessing if a course at one California community college will count the same at another.
The following are the first six CCN courses (starting in fall 2025):
- ENGL C1000 – Academic Reading and Writing (formerly ENGL 101)
- ENGL C1001 – Critical Thinking and Writing (formerly ENGL 102)
- COMM C1000 – Introduction to Public Speaking (formerly COMMST 100)
- STAT C1000 – Introduction to Statistics (formerly MATH 108)
- POLS C1000 – American Government and Politics (formerly POLIT 100)
- PSYC C1000 – Introduction to Psychology (formerly PSYCH 100)
