Free Arts & Lectures event is aimed at raising awareness of local and international exploitation of young girls in the commercial sex trade industry.

As the first of several San Bernardino Valley College Arts & Lectures activities scheduled for the spring 2012 semester, a free film screening of Very Young Girls will be held in SBVC’s Library Viewing Room on Wednesday, January 25, 2012, from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. The 84-minute film will be followed immediately by a Q & A panel with local experts who are working toward combating human trafficking.

Critically-acclaimed by the New York Times and film festivals around the world, Very Young Girls is an exposé of human trafficking that follows thirteen and fourteen year-old American girls as they are seduced, abused, and sold on New York’s streets by pimps, and treated as adult criminals by police. The 2007 film follows the barely-adolescent girls in real-time, using intimate interviews with them as they are first lured on to the streets and the dire events which follow.

The viewing and panel discussion is being organized in conjunction with the San Bernardino County Coalition Against Sexual Exploitation (CASE), a partnership of public and private entities who have joined together to develop resources in the county to educate, prevent, intervene and treat victims of sexual exploitation. The CASE goal is to coordinate services tailored to the characteristics and circumstances of these children, train law enforcement on investigation and detection, educate the public and create awareness to protect children from abuse and exploitation.

The 2nd Annual County of San Bernardino Coalition Against Sexual Exploitation Anti-Human Trafficking Awareness Walk on Saturday, January 28th is one of several events in the region aimed at bringing attention to what many people view as a form of modern-day slavery.

Free parking for the film viewing is available at the Pro Swap Meet at 632 S. Mt. Vernon Avenue (across the street from San Bernardino Valley College). No RSVP is necessary.
