The Chemistry program is committed to providing an inclusive, engaging, and rigorous learning environment where all students feel welcomed and supported in their academic journey. Chemistry is foundational to understanding the world around us. The program equips students with critical thinking, problem-solving, and scientific reasoning skills that are essential in today’s complex and diverse society.
The program serves a broad spectrum of students, including:
- Students majoring in chemistry or related scientific fields,
- Students pursuing careers in the health sciences, and
- Students completing general education science requirements.
Courses emphasize active learning and hands-on experiences, with laboratory components playing a central role. Students work directly with a wide range of scientific instruments, preparing them for professional work or further study.
Students intending to transfer to a four-year institution to major in chemistry or biochemistry are encouraged to meet with a counselor early in their academic career. Transfer requirements can vary by university, and personalized academic planning helps ensure that all necessary lower-division coursework is completed for a smooth transition.

Chemisty Prerequisites and Challenges
CHEM 150 (General Chemistry I) and CHEM 104 (Introductory Organic and Biological Chemistry) require the completion of CHEM 101 (Introductory Chemistry) as a prerequisite.
The CHEM 101 prerequisite may be satisfied in one of the following three ways:
- Introductory Chemistry: Completion of an equivalent course at SBVC or another accredited college or university (documented by unofficial transcripts). Note that high school chemistry does not meet the prerequisite.
- AP Examination: A passing score on the AP Chemistry exam (documented by a high school transcript or official AP score documentation).
- ACS Diagnostic Exam: A passing score on the American Chemical Society (ACS) Diagnostic Exam administered by the Chemistry Department. Please contact the department chair to schedule an appointment.
All other chemistry prerequisites must be met by completing the specific course at SBVC or by providing transcripts that verify the completion of an equivalent course elsewhere.
For questions regarding prerequisite clearances, please contact the department chair.
