Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)

What skills can students demonstrate by the end of your course?

This is the driving question for Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs). Ask yourself this question as you develop SLOs for your courses.  Student Learning Outcomes describe what students should be able to demonstrate by the end of a course, program or learning expereince. SLOs help faculty design meaningful learning activities, assess student achievement, and use results to support continuous improvement.

At SBVC, SLO assessment is a faculty-led process that supports student success, curriculum quality, equity-minded reflection, and accreditation evidence.

Faculty SLO Process
Faculty should use the following process when reviewing, assessing, or reporting SLOs:

  1. Confirm official SLOs
Use the current SLO Master List and the Course Outline of Record in CurriQunet META.
  2. Assess student learning
Assess each SLO using meaningful course assignments, exams, skills demonstrations, projects, or other appropriate measures.
  3. Report results in SLO Cloud
Submit SLO results within 5 days after course completion. Include assessment results, instructional modality, and quality improvement reflections.
  4. Use results for improvement
SLO results should support faculty dialogue, course planning, program review, curriculum updates, and student success efforts.
2025–2026 SLO Lead Updates

During the 2025–2026 academic year, SBVC strengthened SLO support through updated faculty resources, clearer reporting guidance, SLO rubric development, and improved alignment between course, program, and institutional learning outcomes.

These updates are intended to make SLO work more meaningful, consistent, and useful for faculty, programs, and accreditation evidence.

Quick Faculty Reminder
Faculty should ensure that:
  • SLOs listed in syllabi and Canvas match the official Course Outline of Record.
  • Every SLO is assessed for every assigned course section.
  • SLO results are submitted within 5 days after course completion.
  • Zero Enrollment is selected in SLO Cloud for cancelled assigned sections.
  • Quality improvement efforts are documented when reporting results.
