SBVC Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month
San Bernardino Valley College celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month with food and creative cultural expressions.
The festivities began on September 15, the second day of Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) Week, and concluded on October 15 with a Flavors and Sounds of Hispanic Heritage Month event.
“Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month is an opportunity for SBVC to recognize and honor the histories, cultures, contributions, and lived experiences of our Hispanic and Latino/a/x community members,” said Ray Carlos, dean of student engagement and support programs. “It also reminds us that being an HSI is a continuing commitment to do what we can so that our students feel seen, valued, supported, and empowered to succeed.”
At the September kickoff events, students enjoyed snacks and drinks while learning about Hispanic and Latinx history and resources available to them as students at an HSI.
“I hope our Hispanic Heritage Month celebration reflects the richness and diversity of our students’ identities and experiences, while creating meaningful opportunities for learning, connection, pride, and community,” Carlos said.
Throughout the month, students, faculty, and staff also participated in a piñata-making workshop, a salsa contest, Hispanic Heritage Night at a men’s soccer game, and a custom-made SBVC Lotería. Jennifer Verduzco, Karen Arellano, and Consuelo Zepeda won Lotería and Amber Barzak and Maria Jimenez won the salsa competition.
