Requirements for New Student Admissions
- Any individual, age 18 or older, who can reasonably benefit from instruction.
Advisement for English as a second language (ESL) learners:
If English is not your primary language, you may benefit from classes to strengthen your skills in the English language. English as a second language courses benefit students if:
- English is not the language you feel most comfortable using on a daily basis.
- You have not completed high school in the United States.
- You have completed high school but believe you can benefit from further instruction in the English language.
Steps to Apply
- To begin your application, visit opencccapply.net and create a new account.
- Once you are signed in, select "San Bernardino Valley College" from the menu.
- Complete all 7 steps of the college application, and submit!
Helpful Tips:
- You should receive your student ID number within 24 hours. Be sure to write down your 7-digit student ID number and your username!
- If you need assistance with completing the college application, visit the Welcome Center located in AD/SS-102.
- You can fill out the FAFSA (FREE Application for Federal Student Aid), which helps to determine your financial need and aid eligibility.
- To receive the highest amount of financial aid, submit your FAFSA as soon as October 1, and before March 2.
- Complete or renew your application using the federal school code #001272.
- If you are not a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or eligible non-citizen, fill out the CA Dream Act Application Instead. To learn more, read this guide.
- Create your SelfService password (CLICK HERE) by using the user ID provided in your welcome email that was sent to your SBVC email account.
- Complete your Online Orientation by logging into SelfService.
- Upon completing your orientation, print the Orientation Certificate or take a good quality picture of the certificate. You will need it when you make an appointment to take the ESL assessment.

Recommendations for Classes:
- Students who are interested in improving their speaking and listening skills in English are recommended to meet with an ESL counselor for more information.
- Students who are interested in improving their writing skills in English are recommended to take the ESL assessment. Please refer to the following steps to take the ESL assessment.
- Schedule an appointment with an ESL counselor via our ESL webpage or call (909) 384-4418.
- Meet with a counselor to develop your Education Plan. A counselor is a valuable resource to help you to reach your goals!

- Note: It is recommended that you bring your ESL assessment score to your counseling appointment.
- Confirm your Priority Registration date in your SelfService account.
- This can be found by clicking the "My Academics" button on the SelfService home dashboard.
- How to register for classes in SelfService
- Pay your fees at time of registration. Currently, students will not be dropped for
non-payment of registration fees.
- Not all registration fees are covered by the California Promise Grant Waiver, which covers the charge of $46 per unit. Read about Enrollment Fees that are required and how to calculate them.
- Note: Noncredit courses do not have enrollment fees.
