Professional Development Committee
Professional Development is an essential part of advancing both individual careers and the broader mission of San Bernardino Valley College. It includes ongoing education, training, and growth opportunities designed to help employees build new skills, stay current with industry trends, and strengthen their ability to support student success. It can include formal training like courses and conferences, as well as informal learning such as workshops or mentoring. he goal of “professional development” is to enhance both job-specific and career-wide competencies, at any stage/level of an individual’s career, regardless of classification and years of experience.
What Professional Development Includes
- Formal Training: Workshops, certifications, conferences, college courses, and online learning.
- Informal Learning: Mentoring, peer learning, observing others, independent research, and reading.
- Career Advancement: Skill-building that supports promotions, new roles, and long-term career paths.
- Maintaining Credentials: Required continuing education for licenses or certifications.
- Staying Current: Keeping up with emerging tools, practices, and trends across the educational landscape.
About the PD Committee
The Professional Development Committee serves as an Institutional Advisory Committee for the San Bernardino Valley College Campus Professional Development programs/activities and as a resource for the needs of the SBVC Educational Professional Community. This community consists of ALL members of our Faculty (full-time and Adjunct, Instructional and Non-Instructional), Classified Professional Staff (full-time and part-time), and Managers. The PD Committee is responsible for planning, programming, and communicating campus professional development opportunities, specific discipline related topics/areas of research, while incorporating local (site, District and/or regional level) considerations, California Community College Chancellor’s Office/state level initiatives and legislation, as well as Federal level educationally related matters as applicable. The faculty on the PD Committee also serve as advisory to the District Sabbatical Leave Committee and are involved approval process for faculty flex requirements
