Prepare for Tutoring:

We are pleased that you have decided to use our services on your path to success. We have created this guide as an overview of what you can expect when visiting the ASCs.

Any currently enrolled student in good standing at SBVC or CHC is welcome use the resources available in the ASCs.

We will work with you to establish specific goals for your tutoring session.

We will show and ask you to try different study techniques that will help you succeed in your courses.

We will work with you to develop your skills so that you can feel confident about your ability to succeed independently in your courses.

We will be prepared to answer most questions, but we will admit when we don’t know something and try to help you find the answers you need.

We will show respect to everyone who uses the ASCs

We will be patient, kind, and empathetic.

We will give you our full attention when we are working directly with you.

We will try to help everyone in the most efficient and fair manner possible. You may be asked to work independently on something while a tutor is helping another student.

We will make you aware of the resources available to you in the ASCs and across campus.

We cannot help with quizzes, exams, tests, etc.

We cannot assign or predict grades.

To make the most out of your experience at the ASCs, we ask that you do the following:

Check in and out each time you use the ASCs using your I.D. card or I.D. number. This helps us keep tutoring available and free.

Bring your student I.D. card if you wish to check out a resource such as a computer or textbook.

Bring (or borrow) all of the necessary materials to have an effective session such as your syllabus and textbook.

Be actively engaged with your tutor and participate fully in the session.

Understand that we are able to assist and guide you with your work and study skills, but we cannot do your work for you as you are ultimately responsible for your own success.

Understand that we do not provide individual tutoring. Tutors may be working with multiple students at the same time. Please be patient.

Be respectful of everyone in the ASCs and adhere to the Student Rights and Responsibilities as outlined in the San Bernardino Valley College Student Handbook.

Direct questions and concerns to ASC staff. We are here to help you, and we are always trying to improve our services.

Have questions about tutoring? Contact Jody Fehr (Faculty Tutoring Coordinator) at jfehr@valleycollege.edu or (909) 384-8601.

Supplemental Instruction (SI) Across the Disciplines

SI is an academic assistance program that utilizes peer-assisted study sessions. SI sessions are regularly scheduled, informal review sessions facilitated by SI Leaders in which students compare notes, discuss readings, develop organizational tools, and predict test items. SI Leaders are students who have previously done well in the course and who attend all class lectures, take notes, and act as model students.

If you are interested in participating in SI, you should:

  • Check with your instructor to confirm that you have an SI Leader in your class.
  • Consult the associated class Canvas page for SI Session Zoom link information.
