The game board is made of SBVC's Catalog and Schedule covers, and the goal is simple: be the first person to reach Commencement. Alejandra Aguilera, SBVC's social media coordinator, said that when she "saw the schedule covers together, I instantly knew I needed to do something with that." While brainstorming with colleagues, Aguilera came up with the concept of turning the covers into a game board, and then devised rules.

"You roll the dice and grab a card depending on the 'semester' you land on," Aguilera explained. "The cards display situations the typical SBVC student might find themselves in. The situations range from missing the bus to winning a scholarship. Depending on the situation, the player may stay in their spot or move down some spaces. Each player also starts off with three to five starter cards that can help them deal with the not-so-good situations. One of my favorite cards is the 'Coffee Power Up' that allows you to stay in your spot if the card you dealt was being late to class. The goal is to make it to Commencement."

SBVC's marketing team distributed the boards to students during the Day of Service in December, and they will be available to the entire campus community this spring. The game can also be downloaded and played online at valleycollege.edu/valleypathways.

Offering this creative way to get Wolverines excited about their classes and looking forward to graduation is another way San Bernardino Valley College stands out from the crowd.

"I like the idea of bringing more engaging activities to our students, something that is different than a boring orientation," Aguilera said. "I also think it's important for students to know what kind of good and bad things can happen while you're a student. I hope it serves as a reminder for a lot of things, like yes, you should apply for that scholarship and yes, remember to register on time."
