Earn College Credit For Skills You Learned Outside of the Classroom!

Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) at SBVC is credit awarded for skills and knowledge gained outside of a traditional classroom. Many of our students come to us with years of life, work, and military training and experience. Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) enables the Veteran and the Non-Veteran to pursue a degree or certificate by earning college credit for validated college-level skills and knowledge gained outside of a college classroom. Credit for prior learning may be earned for eligible courses approved by the faculty for students who satisfactorily pass an authorized assessment.

Authorized assessments may include the evaluation of approved external standardized examinations, military service/training, the evaluation of industry-recognized credentials, student-created portfolios, and credit by examination.

Students should meet with a Counselor for specific information regarding CPL and the petition process. Details may be found in SBCCD AP 4235 CPL policy.
