Creating an Exam with Proctorio

Reminders and Best Practices with Proctorio

  • Use Proctorio only after consideration of how it fits into your instructional plan.  Consider your reasoning for implementing or applying Proctorio to an exam prior to doing so.
  • Do not use Proctorio simply because it is an available tool.  The Quizzes tools within Canvas allows you to set a variety of limitations and allowances that may be sufficient for your assessment. Consider your options.
  • Proctorio is not always the best tool and is not a good fit for all exams. Again, consider the reasoning and purpose behind applying the tool.
Proctrio can make the difference between being able to offer a course fully online or not.  Proctorio can be a great tool.  In the case where Proctorio is the answer, use it.
  • If using Proctorio, do a test run with your students first.  Create a low risk or “dry run” quiz and require all students to complete it.  Be sure you enable the parameters in the “dry run” that you will in the real thing.
  • This practice will allow you to ascertain which student will be challenged in using Proctorio, where there may be challenges, what parameters might work or not work for you and allow you and your students to know what it will look and feel like without the pressure of a high stakes exam.
  • Include the information about Proctoio in your Canvas course and/or syllabus.  Inform students of your plan to use Proctorio, what the system will look like to them, what to expect and provide them some resources in case they have questions.
