On Monday, March 26, 2018 the Academic Senate of San Bernardino Valley College will be hosting the candidates for Vice President of Student Services. Let's meet our candidates: Dr. James Daniels, Dr. Kim McGinnis, and Dr. Scott Thayer. 

Dr. James Daniels

Dr. James Daniels
Dr. Daniels has earned a Doctorate in Education Administration from La Sierra University in California, a master’s degree in Industrial Organizational Psychology from California State University San Bernardino, and a B.A. in Ministry and Theology from Hope University. Dr. Daniels and his wife have 4 sons and 1 granddaughter.

Dr. James Daniels is a higher education professional with 30 years of leadership experience in community colleges and universities.  He has served as the senior administrator/chief student affairs officer for the past 14 years in community colleges. Currently, he is the Dean of the New Bedford Campus for Bristol Community College. He is committed to the community college mission of open access, educating the whole student, building diversity and inclusion, and providing visionary student services. 

As a visionary, resilient, and innovative leader, he has overseen the following areas: Welcome Center, Admissions, Records, Financial Aid, Testing Services, Advising Center, Counseling Services, New Student Orientation, Career Services, Student Life and Leadership, Intercollegiate Athletics, Disability Resource Services, Veterans Resource Services, Athletics, Student Government, Student Development, Multicultural Centers, Learning Center, and Trio Programs. Dr. Daniels experience not only include student affairs administration but also academic affairs and continuing education.

Dr. Daniels is a well-rounded student affairs professional who believes in powerful student services. He is highly skilled in strategic enrollment management planning. He has created many enrollment initiatives, programs and events. He has implemented innovative enrollment strategies, marketing programs, and outreach efforts. He is also well versed in the field of diversity and inclusion programing. He believes in respect for all people and a global cultural acceptance that integrates students into an ever diverse and changing world.

Dr. Kim McGinnis

Dr. Kim McGinnis
Dr. Kim McGinnis holds a Bachelor of Science degree in landscape horticulture from North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC; a Masters of Arts degree in education from Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, NC; a Masters of Science in Psychology from Capella University and a Doctorate in educational leadership and policy analysis from East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, TN.

Dr. Kim McGinnis is the Interim Vice President of Student Support Services at Long Beach City College. Prior to LBCC, Dr. McGinnis served as Vice President of Student Services at Monterey Peninsula College and the Dean of Student Services at Miami Dade College Medical Campus. Before Miami, she was Williamsburg Technical College’s eighth president and the College’s first woman President in Kingstree, SC. Other previous positions in the educational field include Vice President of Continuing Education at James Sprunt Community College in Kenansville, NC; Director of Occupational Extension Training, Corporate and Community Education with Carteret Community College in Morehead City, NC; Dean of Technical and Vocational Programs at Mayland Community College in Spruce Pine, NC; and Horticulture Programs Department Head and Instructor also at Mayland.

Dr. McGinnis has received the Excellence in Teaching Award from the North Carolina State Board of Community Colleges and was recognized as the Outstanding Faculty Member at Mayland Community College. She was selected as the Dallas Herring Fellow for the Future President’s Institute representing the North Carolina Community College System in 2008 and more recently was selected to represent Miami Dade College at the Florida College System’s Chancellor’s Leadership Seminar. Additionally, Dr. McGinnis was elected to serve on the Florida College System Board of the Council of Student Affairs. She is past President of the American Association of Women in Community Colleges, NC Chapter and received the Glass Ceiling Award from South Carolina’s Chapter of Women in Higher Education.

Dr. Scott Thayer

Dr. Scott Thayer
Dr. Scott W. Thayer has been an advocate for historically underrepresented students throughout his professional career. Dr. Thayer received his doctorate in Higher Education Administration and Leadership from the University of Southern California focusing on African American male achievement. He completed his Master of Arts in

Counseling and Guidance degree from Point Loma Nazarene University, his Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Rollins College in Florida and his Associate of Arts degree from Normandale Community College in Minnesota.

Dr. Thayer has served in various administrative capacities (Vice President, Dean, Assistant Dean, Director) throughout his career at San Bernardino Valley College, Cuyamaca College, Pasadena City College and Los Angeles Southwest College.  His administrative responsibilities have included the following college programs and areas: Admissions and Records, Counseling, Financial Aid, Student Affairs, Health Center, Athletics, Transfer, Outreach and Recruitment, Associated Students, Student Clubs and Organizations, Cross Cultural Center, Mentoring, Student Discipline/Student Due Process/Title IX, Commencement, Athletic Eligibility, Auxiliary/Flea Market, and oversight of the following federally funded TRIO programs (Student Support Services, Upward Bound, Math/Science Upward Bound and Talent Search).

Dr. Thayer is an established grant writer and has secured over $5M in grant funding to assist underrepresented students in their pursuit of a higher education.  He is a part-time faculty member teaching in the San Diego State University Community College Leadership program and serves on doctoral dissertation committees.  Scott W. Thayer has been active in professional development and community organizations such as the Association of California Community College Administrators (ACCCA), the Have Faith, Be Strong (HFBS) non-profit organization for childhood cancer awareness, the Western Association of Educational Opportunity Personnel (WESTOP) where he previously served as a regional board member, the southern California chapter President, and was involved in committee work within the organization. Dr. Thayer is a founding member of the non-profit organization African American Male Education Network and Development (A²MEND).
