From Hero to Zero Back to Hero: Inclusivity of Film

Wednesday March 30, 2022

2pm - 3pm

Library Viewing Room @SBVC

The arrival and Hollywood's acceptance of "talkie" movies changed access for the Deaf community in many ways. During the "Golden Era" of film, the Deaf community experienced full access to movies by way of employment and entertainment. The use of sound in movies began a long era of exclusion for the Deaf community. During this era of exclusion, there have been many heroes step up and fight for access to be restored. This session will look at what appeared to be a heroic step forward in technology and the impact on access and inclusivity. It will look at those who have been the real heroes in the fight to regain access to the film industry resulting in Deaf actors and actresses now being nominated and winning prestigious awards in film. A hero for some may be a villain for others.
