STAR Student Success Stories
The STAR Program plays a key role in many SBVC student success stories. STAR strives to motivate and empower students to reach their academic and personal goals, as well as work through and prevail in times of challenge and adversity.
LaShawn Hunter has been in the STAR Program since Fall 2008. We have watched LaShawn meet her goal academically. She always brings a special energy to the STAR Program Lab when we see her. LaShawn will be transferring to California State University, San Bernardino in the Fall 2011. We hope that LaShawn will come back to visit and let us know of her inevitable success. LaShawn states:
"Hello, my name is LaShawn Hunter, and I am a Star student at Valley College. I have been apart of the Star Program for three years and it has truly been a blessing to me. This journey in use at the Star Program has been supportive, helpful, and beneficial, helping me to get as far as I have in my life. I have met new people that I now have (personal) friendships with through the Star Program. I have enjoyed the Field trips, to different Universities and it has provided valuable information regarding, transferring, scholarships, and enrollment benefits. The Star Program provides awesome tutoring, which assist students in Math, Chemistry, and English. The Star Program also provides counseling which, the counselors listen, provide positive feed-back and a personal ed-plan that keeps you on the right track . Therefore with the help, and support it has got me through to the very end, which I am now a graduate, this May, 2011. I personally Thank All the Staff, Counselors, Tutors, for their dedication to the Star Program, and making it such a successful program for me.. I will truly miss EVERY ONE!"
Stephanie Medway has been in the STAR Program since Fall 2010. It is always a joy to see Stephanie coming into the STAR Program Lab for services. We have watched Stephanie grow both academically and personally. We hope that we can continue to be part of Stephanie's Journey. Stephanie states:
"My name is Stephanie Medway, and I have been in the STAR Program for two semesters and I feel that this program has really helped me a lot. With out this program I don't think that I would be passing my math class. The tutors in the STAR Program are wonderful and without them it would be overwhelming for me. I do recommend this program to new students. This STAR Program has successfully helped me in many ways. I am very grateful to the counselors also."
Joyce Green has been in the STAR Program since Fall 2009. Besides raising her 3 grandchildren and serving the student as SBVC Student Class President Joyce will be graduating this May with her Associates Degree. We are very proud of Joyce. Joyce states:
"I have been at San Bernardino Valley College for two years now and throughout my educational journey here I have encountered many obstacles. I had to learn that an obstacle does not mean defeat. Through the STAR program I have learned that an obstacle is a unique opportunity to not only use what you have learned on your quest here at SBVC but to have faith in your abilities to overcome in that I have built up my self esteem and confidence and I am fearless in regards to receiving my education and I have learned all of this through the tutelage of the STAR program ~ when I thought I couldn’t make it the staff made sure that giving up was not an option. I am grateful for the TRIO Star Program."
