Women in Mathematics and Science

Friday, April 25, 2014, 7:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

This event focuses on the achievements and contributions of Women in Mathematics by introducing students to individuals who have applied Mathematics to their chosen professions.

The program will provide information on how traditionally underrepresented females can take advantage of the many opportunities available to them, just by knowing a little math.

Keynote Speaker Syd Blue

Syd Blue is a commercial Chief Pilot who runs an aviation business specializing in aerial surveillance.  She has also written, edited and produced productions for multiple entities including television stations and production companies. Syd has published 40 articles and written screenplays and produced an award winning documentary. 

Desirea Haggard, P.E. & Julia Lakes-Martinez

Both Desirea and Julia are Environmental Managers for Cal Portland which is a major building materials and construction solutions provider to the Western U.S. and Canada.  They also serve (Desirea-VP, Julia-Secretary) in Women in Mining Educational Foundation which is a nationwide organization composed of individuals employed in, associated with, or interested in the mining industry.  Members of WIM include engineers, geologists, land men, secretaries, lobbyists, mine workers, educators and concerned citizens. Many WIM members are business and civic leaders extending their influence and expertise into their local communities.

Ashlee Johnson

Ashlee Johnson is a Biomedical Engineer for Metronom Health which provides Continuous Glucose Monitoring Systems for diabetes management. Ashlee is a recent graduate of UC Irvine in Biomedical Engineering.

Emma Diaz

Emma Diaz recently joined San Bernardino Valley College as the new Adult Education Planning Grant Coordinator for the AB86 Program.  Emma comes to SBVC from the North Orange County Community College District where she teaches as an adjunct faculty member.  She has also 14 years of experience working for Hygeia Long Term Care Pharmacy as a Licensed Pharmacy Tech who specializes in working with the gerontology population.

Dr. Julie Shields

Dr. Julie Shields is a graduate from the Doctor of Pharmacy program at USC who teaches for the Pharmacy Tech Program at the North Orange County Community College District.  Dr. Shields has been a pharmacist for over 25 years and along with her teaching responsibilities also works as a pharmacist for Bravo Pharmacy. 

Tremonisha Watson

Tremonisha Watson is a financial analyst who currently works in the aerospace industry. I have a BA in Business Economics, Accounting, and an MBA with an emphasis in Finance. She has been working in this industry for the past 11 years.  Mrs. Watson also freelances as a personal financial coach and tax preparer.
