Here you will learn what the Classified Senate is and how you can get involved.
Your Role as a Classified Staff Member in the Collegial Consultation Process at San
Bernardino Valley College
What is Collegial Consultation?
Collegial Consultation is a process involving faculty, administrators, classified
staff, and students in deliberations regarding day-to-day and long-range planning
and policies for the college. These deliberations lead to recommendations that the
Chancellor carries forward to the Board of Trustees for final approval. In issues
related to academic and professional matters, the Board will rely primarily on the
Academic Senate. Other areas of decision-making in regard to Board Policy will be
mutually agreed upon between the Governing Board, the Academic Senate, administration,
staff, and students.
What is Classified Senate?
The SBVC Classified Senate is an organization of classified staff from all areas of
campus. Our purpose is to represent classified staff in the collegial consultation
process. We are active at college council, district assembly, and campus events. We
are custodians, secretaries, lab technicians, groundskeepers, assistants, supervisors,
students, former students, student activists, mentors, diplomats, and above all of
the above . . . we are classified.
What Does This Mean for You?
Collegial Consultation is an avenue to which campus policy can and does change. If
you have ever asked yourself, “Why do we do this?” and thought you might have a better
idea, senate is the place to bring that idea. If you attended the last Classified
Staff Week and had some issues about the timing of events and would like to suggest
a better way to do things next year, senate is who to contact and collaborate with.
If you have always wanted to be on a campus committee, the Classified Senate President
and CSEA President jointly assign staff to committees and are always looking for interested
people to actively serve our campus.
Classified Senate is involved in every area of our college and is committed to the
belief that input from classified staff, the people in the trenches, provide essential
contributions to the institution’s ability to make sound “educated” decisions with
the best available information. If you would like to learn more, please contact the Senate President Aaron Beavor by email.
