Robert Alexander |
Robert
Alexander
currently serves
as the Associated
Student Government
President. In his
role as president,
Robert serves as
the official representative
of the students
of San Bernardino
Valley College.
He is responsible
for all executive
functions of the
ASG Board of Directors,
carrying out all
legislation, sanctions,
and resolutions
as effectively as
possible, and serves
as a liaison between
the college administration
and the ASG to ensure
students play a
role in participatory
governance. In addition,
Robert is active
in the Student Senate
for California Community
Colleges where he
currently serves
as the Region IX
President.
Robert is serving
his third term in
office with Student
Government (ASG);
first term as a
Senator, second
and third as President.
During his time
at SBVC, Robert
has served on several
shared governance
committees including
Program Review,
College Council,
Accreditation, District
Assembly and staff
hiring committees.
Under his direction
and leadership the
ASG has built many
bridges for incoming
students, enhanced
the effectiveness
of our current student
government, and
advocated for the
students at all
levels. Robert joined
Student Government
to advocate changes
for Students, including
addressing student
concerns about the
rising cost of attending
college and the
high cost of text
books. He was one
of the key players
in jump starting
the textbook rental
program at SBVC.
In addition, Robert
has traveled to
Washington DC to
lobby Congress on
behalf of community
college students.
Robert has completed
certificates in
Administration of
Justice and Crime
Scene Investigation,
completing over
100 units at SBVC.
He plans to continue
his education by
attending SBVC and
studying in the
fields of Paralegal
Studies, Drug and
Alcohol studies,
Sociology, Psychology,
resulting in a certificate
in Human Services
Drug and Alcohol
studies and dual
degrees in Paralegal
Studies and Administration
of Justice. Following
SBVC, Robert plans
to transfer to a
four year University
to obtain a Bachelor/Masters
degree in Sociology
with a minor in
Psychology/Criminal
Profiling, then
go on to Law School
and one day to serve
as a U.S Congressman
and/or U.S Senator.
With a GPA of over
3.7, Robert has
been placed on the
Dean's list for
academic achievement
all semesters attending
SBVC.
In addition to
ASG, Robert participates
in outside activities
and committees within
his community, and
has served as an
intern with local
politicians. He
is a permanent member
of Alpha Gamma Sigma
where he has served
as President.
- What are your ASG goals for this year?
My goals for Student Government are: 1 - Environmental Sustainability of Student Government "GO GREEN" , 2 - Improve and Enhance Internal Infrastructure, 3 - More Activities: Keep Students Active and Informed on Campus, 4 - Enhance ASG Infrastructure and Effectiveness, 5 -- Make Partnerships with outside groups, and School Departments/Divisions, and 6- Awards for Service (ASG members)

- What do you like to do in your free time? What are your hobbies?
What free time! I'm full-time student; I'm currently working full-time, married and have two children. I enjoy spending time with my beautiful wife Rochelle we like going to Disneyland and watching movies. I also enjoy sports (baseball, fencing, golf, and racquetball); I collect sport cards, and like to take walks in the forest.

Vice President
Damaris Castillo-Torres

Damaris Castillo-Torres
currently serves
as the Associated
Student Government
Vice President.
She previously served
as the Student Organizations
Director during
the 2008-2009 academic
year. In addition
to ASG, Damaris
is active in the
Cheer and Dance
Club at SBVC, the
Puente Program,
and the Spanish
Club. She became
involved in student
government when
elected to serve
as the Inter Club
Council (ICC) Representative
for the Puente Club.
After a few ICC
meetings, she was
elected ICC Secretary.
Damaris is a double
majoring in Spanish
and Math and plans
to transfer in the
fall of 2010.

Rochelle Alexander |
Rochelle Alexander
currently serves
as the Executive
Assistant to the
Associated Student
Government Board
of Directors, transcribing
minutes at meetings
and ensuring necessary
supplies are available
to the ASG. She
is currently working
on getting her Associate's
Degree Administration
of Justice, and
is working on Dual-certificates
in Crime Scene Investigation
and Corrections.
Her ultimate career
goal includes transferring
to a four year University
and ultimately obtaining
a Doctorate in Forensic
Pathology.

Jason Buckner |
Jason
P. Buckner
has been very active
in advocacy for
students. He previously
served as the Student
Support Services
Director on the
SBVC Associated
Student Government
and traveled to
Washington DC to
lobby Congress on
behalf of community
college students.
He currently serves
as a Field Representative
for Assembly member
Wilmer Amina Carter.
In his spare time,
Jason coaches youth
baseball and football
and is a volunteer
for the Special
Olympics.

Cedric
Henry currently
serves as the liaison
to the Student Services
Division, providing
feedback that helps
to enhance and improve
student services
programs across
campus. He became
involved in ASG
because of his desire
to help others.
Participation in
ASG has given him
first hand knowledge
of the governmental
process and he hopes
to continue to champion
the voice of the
students. During
his tenure, Cedric
has assisted in
organizing the campus
wide giving thanks
food drive, collecting
donations from across
campus to ensure
that students in
need had a Thanksgiving
meal. In his spare
time, Cedric serves
as a tutor in math
and reading.

I love listening to music.

Desirae Davis |
Desirae
Davis currently
serves as the Student
Organizations Director,
facilitating the
Inter-Club Council
meetings and generally
assisting clubs.
Desirae joined ASG
to make a difference
on campus and to
learn leadership
skills. Since joining
ASG, she has found
herself getting
more and more involved
throughout campus,
serving to represent
the student voice.
Desirae's goal for
this year is to
promote clubs on
campus and to plan
even more club activities.
In her spare time,
she is a member
of the New Vision's
Club, Caduceus Club
and American Sign
Language Club. Off
campus she volunteers
with the American
Red Cross.

Crocheting, reading and volunteering.

Jessica Hernandez |
Jessica
Hernandez
currently serves
as the Legislative
Affairs Director,
keeping the ASG
informed and aware
of statewide issues
impacting community
colleges. She currently
serves as a Regional
Senator to the Student
Senate for California
Community Colleges
where she serves
as the voice of
the students in
matters of Region
IX concern before
the Board of Governors,
Consultation Council
& all statewide
boards, committees,
& ad hoc groups.
Jessica has previously
served as the ASG
Vice President during
the 2007-2008 and
2008-2009 academic
years. She initially
started out as Justice
and Court Clerk
where she participated
in public forums
for students to
address their issues
and concerns that
updated internal
reporting forms.
Additionally she
sat on the ASG Activities
and Senate Budget
Development committees.
- What are your ASG goals for this year?
I look forward to helping SBVC students succeed in their academic endeavors and insuring the ASG is effectively representing those students' collective needs. As well as helping my fellow ASG members achieve their goals and help them enjoy their new experience in ASG.

Affairs
Javier G. Alcaraz,
Jr. |
Javier
G. Alcaraz, Jr.
currently serves
as the Student Center
Affairs Director,
ensuring policies,
events and budget
for the Student
Center. Javier served
as SBVC's Associated
Student Government
President for the
2006-2007 and 2007-2008
academic years and
Student Trustee
for the 2008-2009
academic year. He
is a committed citizen
to community building,
advocating for policies
that will improve
student access and
promote student
success. As a Certified
Student Leader some
of his successes
include establishing
the Textbook Rental
Program at SBVC
that has assisted
265 students at
$20,500 in textbook
savings, as well
as influencing the
increase in student
worker wages at
SBCCD from $6.50/hour
to $8.00/hour. Additionally,
he has lobbied US
congressmen on behalf
of the much needed
Pell Grant increases.
Javier was awarded
the Joe Baca Jr.
Foundation scholarship
on May 9, 2008 for
his committed dedication
to community building
& high quality educational
environments for
all. He is pursuing
Associate of Arts
Degrees in Business
Administration and
Graphic Arts. His
intentions are to
transfer to Cal
Poly Pomona to obtain
a Bachelors Degree
in Business Administration
and complete his
education with a
Masters in Business
from the University
of Southern California.

Samuel
Padilla
currently serves
as the liaison to
the Administrative
Services Division,
providing feedback
that helps enhance
and improve services
and programs across
campus. Samuel was
persuaded to join
the Associated Student
Government by a
member of the ASG
because she believed
he had the leadership
skills necessary
to represent students.
He was immediately
impressed with the
professionalism
and organization
of the group. During
his tenure, Samuel
has assisted in
organizing and hosting
campus events and
has worked diligently
to ensure the installation
of electric doors
across campus to
ensure access for
students with disabilities.
In his spare time
he serves as the
Vice President of
the New Visions
Club and volunteers
at community events
at his church.
- In what ways would you say that being a member of the Associated Student Government has broadened your knowledge and/or involvement with SBVC as a whole?
Attending shared governance committees has broadened my knowledge because I better understand the issues that affect students and also I know how the college operates through shared governance.

Finance
Miguel Sanchez |
Miguel
Sanchez
currently serves
as the Finance Director
for the ASG-SBVC,
overseeing the administration
of funds, and ensuring
proper use of those
funds. Miguel joined
ASG-SBVC to improve
student's life on
campus, in the community,
city, county, state
and country. He
is proud to represent
the student's voice
to School Administrators,
State and Federal
Congress. Upon joining
ASG he was impressed
with the level at
which student leaders
have demonstrated
deep concern to
improve the quality
of life on campus,
without showing
any type of prejudice
or attitude. Miguel
also serves as the
president of the
College Democrats
Club at SBVC, through
this club he has
advocated your civil
rights within our
school as well as
outside. The club
is also working
on a proposal to
publishers to provide
the student College
population texts
in CD ROMS, to reduce
their cost of publishing
their material.
- What are your ASG goals for this year?
To obtain ideas, participation and collaboration from all students across campus to improve our campus community.
- What are your hobbies?
My hobbies are hiking, jogging, bicycling, swimming, reading and watching movies that stimulate the intellect. We are in the process of starting a hiking club on campus that will go on day long field trips within 50 miles of SBVC. Come join us!

Public Relations
Ryan Broderick |
Ryan
Broderick
currently serves
as the Public Relations
Director, ensuring
vendor participation
in the ASG Discount
Sticker Program,
promoting ASG issues
and activities,
and assisting clubs
and other ASG Directors
with advertizing
and marketing. He
also serves on the
Enrollment Management
Committee. Ryan
joined the ASG-SBVC
because he felt
that he could contribute
to creating a strong
campus identity
and foster a greater
sense of community
among the students.
His primary goal
for ASG is to increase
the ASG Discount
Sticker Program
to at least 100
continuous vendors
each year. In addition,
Ryan hoped to be
able to create a
marketing campaign
to inform students
of all of the great
services that the
ASG provides and
does for students
at SBVC, and begin
to foster a sense
of campus pride
at Valley College.
In his spare time,
Ryan is a member
of the Gay-Straight
Alliance and the
Jewish Student Union.
Off campus, he volunteers
with a local youth
organization.
- What is your reason
for seeking higher
levels of education?
I want to continue
my education because
with knowledge,
you can do almost
anything if you
prepare for it.

Events Director,

body. She joined
ASG because she
wanted to take
part in
something she
felt was
important to
SBVC. This year,
Dezerea hopes to
offer events
that give back
to our students.
During her
tenure, she
assisted in

Being in ASG has showed me how important it is for students to make their opinion heard, in matters that will not only affect the campus but the students as well.
- What is your reason for seeking higher levels of education?
I feel that in order to truly succeed in life and to have a sense of accomplishment I need to conquer my biggest challenge which has and currently is school.
