Instruction Honors Program |
|---|
The mission of the Honors Program is to provide students with a rigorous learning experience that encourages independent and creative thought, to enhance students' critical reading, writing and thinking abilities as tools for achieving further academic success, and to prepare students for transfer to four-year institutions and to remain in the academic honors track. Students involved in the Honors Program have the opportunity to develop unique links with UCLA, UC Irvine, UC Riverside, Cal Poly Pomona, Pepperdine University, UC Santa Cruz, and Chapman University including:
- Priority admission consideration and consideration for scholarships
- Privileges such as use of the libraries
- Opportunities to attend academic, cultural, and athletic events, campus tours, and the Honors Transfer Day
Any student desiring the challenge and benefits of the Honors Program is welcome to join. To succeed in the program, students should have a genuine intellectual curiosity and a strong sense of personal responsibility and diligence in completing all academic work. In addition, the Program particularly encourages students to join if they meet the following standards: - GPA of 3.0 or higher in at least 12 units of transfer level college coursework (courses numbered 100 or above) OR
- Minimum high school GPA of 3.50.
Students may apply to the Honors Program at any time during the school year. In addition, students are urged to complete an Education Plan with the Honors Program Counselor, Willene Nelson. Students must satisfy each of the following requirements to complete the Honors Program: - Complete a minimum of 15 units in honors courses
- Complete some community service activity (see Honors Program Counselor for options)
- Maintain a GPA of 3.3 in honors classes
- Graduate with an overall GPA of 3.0 in college coursework
- Petition to graduate must be completed before published deadline (see Records Office for details)
Students who successfully complete the Honors Program will receive an Honors Program Gold Seal on their diplomas, a gold tassel and sash for graduation, an engraved medallion, and a certificate of completion.
