OVERVIEW:
San Bernardino Valley College embraces the concept of a drug free campus. All students, staff and faculty have the responsibility to provide and the right to work or study in an educational environment that is free of the effects of alcohol and substance abuse. As the college's mission includes enabling students to reach their educational goals, and to provide opportunity to develop effectively, socially and intellectually, these goals would be subordinated and subverted by problems caused by alcohol and drugs.

ALL MEMBERS OF THE COLLEGE COMMUNITY

should take personal responsibility to adhere to and enforce college policies, city ordinances, state laws and federal statutes. Enforcement attempts are not to be punitive except in severe or repeat offenses, but rather to provide remediation to the individual and to restore them to a normal abuse-free lifestyle. The campus policies apply to all who enter our domain: full time and part time students, permanent contract and adjunct faculty, college staff, district employees, contractors with the district, and administrators.

The college deals with alcohol and substance abuse problems by providing:
  • Counseling & referral services to college health service personnel, county agencies, Veterans affairs medical centers and local hospitals and clinics.
  • Formal education: Human services classes and curriculum infusion into other appropriate classes (nursing, physiology, health, psychology, communication, etc.)
  • A committee on alcohol and drug abuse prevention to recommend policies and changes.
  • Dissemination of information on the consequences of substance abuse.
  • Provision of material to provide awareness of the physical and psychological effects of substance abuse.
  • Promotion of the concept that alcohol and substance abuse are illnesses that may require professional treatment.
  • Survey of student and employee attitudes and lifestyles in relation to alcohol and drugs.
  • Ongoing prevention activities.
  • Peer based advising of students by students.
  • Clubs: Human Services club, Caduceus club.
