Judith
Valles was the first Latina President of a California Community College.
The daughter of immigrants from Mexico, Valles graduated from San Bernardino
High and completed two years of study at Valley College (1953), excelling
in academics and archery. She graduated from the University of Redlands
with a major in English (1956) and, for several years, taught in elementary
and high school. She earned a M.A. in Spanish Literature at the University
of California at Riverside (1966) and did doctoral work at UCLA. Valles
was appointed to the Valley College faculty in 1965 and taught Spanish at
the college until 1984. In addition to being a popular teacher, Valles was
a skilled administrator. She headed the Department of Foreign Languages
(1972-76), chaired the Division of Humanities (1976-81) and was Dean of
Extended Day and Summer Session (1981-83). From 1983-87, Valles was the
Administrative Dean of Academic Affairs (1983-87), the chief instructional
officer at the college, and briefly held the position of Executive Vice
President of Academic and Student Affairs (1987-88). In 1988, she was appointed
President of Golden West College and was chief executive of that campus
until retiring in 1993. Since "retiring," Valles served as acting President
of Coastline Community College and is in her second term on the Board of
Trustees of the San Bernardino Community College District. She produced
and hosted a Spanish speaking television show, "Impacto," for KVCR-TV and
has been involved in the performing arts. She was a recipient of the YWCA
Outstanding Women of Orange County Award (1990) and the Citizen of Achievement
Award from the League of Women Voters (1989). Valles was inducted into the
Valley College Alumni Hall of Fame in 1991. |
