Dorothy Ella Inghram
Dorthy Ella IngramDorothy Ella Inghram has lived nearly all of her long and rich life in San Bernardino. She graduated from Mt. Vernon Elementary, Sturges Junior High, San Bernardino High (1923), Valley College (1934), and the University of Redlands, where she received a bachelor's in music (1936) and an M.A. (1958) in education. In 1929, as a student, she composed the music for SBVC's Alma Mater; the lyrics were written by classmate Marie Brodeur. Dorothy concluded her distinguished career in education in 1971, teaching briefly at Prarie View College in Texas before coming to the Mill School District in San Bernardino where she served as a teacher, principal, and District Superintendent. She is an accomplished church organist and the author of 4 books including Beyond All This, the riveting story of her family and of other African-Americans living in San Bernardino during the period 1888-1971. Her latest book is entitled The Incredible You: Spirit Within. Inghram has been the recipient of many awards and honors. A branch of the San Bernardino public library system bears her name and her 90th birthday (Nov. 9, 1995) was designated as Dorothy Inghram Day in San Bernardino. She is a lifetime member of the Alumni Association and regularly contributes to the scholarship at the college bearing her name. Inghram was inducted into the SBVC Hall of Fame in 1989.
